Summer maintenance training of turf grass with reduced environmental impact. Recycling has become a widely adopted waste management practice in Minnesota. Statewide, businesses and organizations have many opportunities to recycle through public and private collection programs. Green building, also called "sustainable or "high-performance" building, means having a significantly reduced impact on the Earth's resources compared to conventional building. It also means creating a building that is healthier and more comfortable for its occupants, consequently enhancing productivity.

We define a "green building" as one that is healthy and comfortable for its occupants and is economical to operate. It conserves resources (including energy, water, raw materials and land) and minimizes the generation of toxic materials and waste in its design, construction, landscaping, and operation. A green building also considers historic preservation and access to public infrastructure systems, as well as the entire life cycle of the building and its components.

Pests are organisms that are capable of harming humans, animals, plants or the environment. Pests include a variety of organisms ranging from microbes to plants to animals.

Multiple approaches are used by MDA to deal with pests. First, we try to prevent new pests from arriving in Minnesota or to detect them soon after they arrive. If a pest is not widespread, we will try to eradicate or contain the infestation. If the pest is widely established, we use an integrated approach to manage pest populations.

If you suspect an invasive pest, please use the Invasive Species Reporting Form (PDF) to report it MDA. You can play a role in helping to detect invasive pests from moving into and spreading across Minnesota. Examples of insect pests that have been or are of concern to MDA are the gypsy moth, emerald ash borer, soybean aphid and Japanese beetle.

Creative Designs | Dream Landscapes

Creative Dream Landscapes and Design Services

We have a passion for design, and more importantly, making your dream a reality. Some projects require little design and can be handled with a written estimate during our first consultation. Smaller projects may also allow for designs to be finalized at our initial appointment and left with our customers for a small fee.

Many have written to us letters expressing their joy in the creation that took place at their home. You can read some of their comments in testimonials.

For the last 35 years, we have been a leader in the landscape design profession and have been honored with numerous landscape design awards. When utilizing our knowledge and creativity to design your dream landscape, we offer you exciting landscape ideas and an abundance of practical knowledge regarding installation. We have a variety of great ideas to meet the variety of budgets.

Various Landscape Design Options:

We would love to meet with you at your home, at no cost, and discuss some specific landscape design ideas to achieve your landscaping dreams, whether that is as simple as selecting a few plants, or as involved as creating an entirely new landscape. Depending on the scale of the potential landscaping, sometimes this meeting is all that is needed to develop some landscape design ideas you will love.

In other cases, it may be preferred that we develop landscape design ideas "on paper, " either hand-drawn or computer drawn, and present them to you. In this circumstance, we will develop either one or several landscape design options, which can range from conceptual to highly-detailed landscape plans. This could be as little as a few hundred dollars or up to a thousand dollars.

On the most involved end, your landscape project requires a detailed master plan. Often in this case, there are multiple moving parts in the project - for example: swimming pool, patio, deck, grading, drainage, planting, lighting, etc. As necessary, we coordinate with the town and engineers to develop a master landscape plan that you will love.

Perennial Gardens and Seasonal Color Planting

Perennial Gardens and Seasonal Color Planting

Our Perennial experts will design a colorful perennial garden that will allow you to enjoy the seasonal colors and the wildlife the they attract. We can give you four seasons of colors to enjoy.
Great for curb appeal and colorful accents
Trees and shrubs provide the outline, as well as, a backdrop of the landscape, perennials providing borders and accents. Perennials are defined as plants that live more than 3 years, however some perennials can be short lived, only living for a couple of seasons, while others, such as peonies may flourish for 30 years.

Perennials are great ways to highlight your landscape. The tall, brilliant colors of the Echinacea flowers will give your garden new depth, while the tiny to massive Hosta leaves provide it with texture and foliage. Whether you are looking for a perennial that needs full sun or full shade, our selection covers both and everything in between.

Our perennial greenhouse is laid out for your shopping convenience by color coded pots. If you are looking for a perennial that requires full sun, look for yellow pots, look for orange pots if you want a perennial for part sun, and purple pots indicate plants for shade.

  • Cottage Garden Plants and Design History: Cottage gardens are gardens of simplicity of plant choice. They were originally farmyard gardens – owned and grown by the housewife and not estate gardens. They were jumbles of plants that could be grown from seed, the seed collected and kept and shared with neighbors and friends. If not from seed, then “starts” or roots were shared. They were not all-too-well graphically designed or subtle shades of colours chosen to match the draperies. They were well-loved plants and they were all tossed into a small patch of ground to thrive and survive with as little problem as possible.
  • Design a Bed: Is your garden a sunny garden or a shady garden?
The rule of thumb here is that if you’re in the north and your garden gets sunshine between 10 am and 2 pm, you have a sunny garden. That’s a full 4 hours of hot sunshine and it will likely get sun on either side of that as well. If your garden doesn’t get it between those hours then you may have a part-shade garden (sunshine at either end of those hours but no mid-day sunshine). Or you might have a shade-garden with sunshine only dappled or only in the early morning before 10 or in the evening after 6. To give you the practical information on this rather than the theoretical - there’s a lot of overlap between the classes of sunny- part-sun, and shade gardens. There’s no hard and fast answer because it depends on the garden, the plants you like and the conditions in the garden. It does depend on a little experimentation so don’t hesitate to try a sun-loving plant in the sunniest spot you have; you might be pleasantly surprised.
  • Annual and Perennial Flower Comparison:
Let's look at the differences between annual and perennial flowers in the garden because there are some major differences you should be aware of. Annual plants are killed by frost or cold weather and live for one growing season. Perennial plants live through and over this cold weather - in very cold climates, the leaves die, the plant hibernates to reappear in the spring. Perennials may last anywhere from 2 to 50 years depending on the perennial in question. Annuals tend to flower for a very long time. If deadheaded, they can be encouraged to produce more blooms. Perennials tend to flower for a 6 week time - some shorter and some longer but very few bloom all summer. Annuals are mostly grown from seed and you can save your own with most plants. Some of the fancier hybrids are produced by cuttings or tissue culture and these are mostly patented or branded plants put out by large nurseries. Perennials can also be grown from seed but only the species plants. The fancy hybrids need to be propagated by asexual methods (cuttings, division, tissue culture) Seeds from hybrid plants will not come true from seed.
  • Bog Gardens - Practical considerations in making a bog garden:
Because most perennial gardeners don't have bog gardens, there is an entire class of plants that they ignore Or worse, if they try to grow these plants, they fail miserably. And, if you've ever seen a full-blooming stand of Japanese Iris or Primula, you know why you would want to grow these in your bog gardens. In our own bog gardens, we excavate at least 18 inches of soil and put a layer of heavy plastic down. The plastic is laid at least half way up the sides of the excavation so we have a good 8 to 12 inches of water holding capacity. Most garden soil is returned back into the hole making sure all rocks and weed roots are removed while backfilling. Rocks and plastic liners simply don't co-exist, so don't really worry about having the odd hole in the plastic liner as this is a wet bog garden not a swimming pool. If the water drains away, then it is really easy to turn on the sprinkler and wet it all back up again. The design for this summer's project includes putting two sprinkler heads in this garden area so that when the regular garden gets one dose of water, the bog gardens will receive a double dose.
  • Niche Gardens:

When we talk about niche gardens, there are as many options as there are gardeners. And let us be honest here, some of these garden design options are because of interest and some because of the nature of being politically correct. Some of the more common types of specialized gardens include:

Alpine or Rock Gardens: This kind of garden can be defined as growing the smallest plants possible from the highest mountain ranges furthest from your home in a garden at sea level. In purist gardens, the taller the plant - the less desirable. In fact, I’ve read posts on listservs that speak of any plant over 12-inches tall as being too tall for the rock garden. Mind you, this kind of niche garden is modified by non-collectors to include almost any plant that’s planted among rocks.

    Xeric Gardens:
We define xeric gardens as those where we allow our plants to die if nature doesn’t rain on them. Those who love this form of politically correct garden point out that one shouldn’t have English Cottage Gardens in Reno, Nevada. I counter by pointing out that having an English garden out in that desert makes about as much sense as putting the city there in the first place. There is a serious side to this debate, as global warming changes weather patterns and people flock to warmer areas, there is a growing water shortfall and competition for scarce resources. In general this kind of niche garden makes sense in areas where water shortages are common and absolutely no sense in areas where waterfall is adequate. Proponents will counter that it should be mandatory in all regions.

    Native Plant Gardens:
This kind of garden is composed of native plants but the issue is how to define native. Is a plant a native if it was brought over the ice-bridge from what is now Russia as North America was colonized. It didn’t exist before that period so is it a native. If it’s OK for those folks to bring in plants, is it OK for other native tribes to swap plants and spread commercial seed crops. If that’s OK, why is it suddenly not-OK to introduce plants? While that is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the real question is in defining what “native” means. Does buying a “native” Echinacea mean you’re growing native plants? Well, not if you’re growing this plant in an area where it never lived in the wild. You’re not growing a “native” to your area - you’re growing an imported plant. To have a native garden, you then must only grow plants that could have been in your area at some undetermined time brought by some undetermined group of individuals.

Modular, Boulder and Retaining Walls

Modular, Boulder and Retaining Walls

Retaining walls stabilize a slope and protect planted areas from erosion, but they can be used to do much more. Retaining Walls can create pathways, group plants and gardens, add depth and texture to completely change the shape and feel of an environment, even create outdoor "rooms." Our architects can help you use walls to create aesthetic themes and spaces. At Maple Crest Landscape, you can choose from many types of retaining walls, including poured concrete, conventional stacked blocks, and stackable decorative blocks that need no mortar. Another design option is manufactured blocks and glass with concrete façade elements, now available in a growing array of colors and textures made to resemble just about anything, from wood to stacked slate.

Boulder Walls: Boulder walls look natural in any landscape for homes and businesses. Made from field stone or natural materials, these durable walls protect your soil from erosion while complimenting your landscape. The landscape of a boulder retaining wall provides natural beauty and a preserving protection against soil erosion. Boulders and large rocks are the best choice against environmental factors. Boulder walls are more economic than block retaining wall

Stone Walls: Boulder walls look natural in any landscape for homes and businesses.

Modular Walls: A long sloping yard may look pretty, but it isn’t very practical. Maple Crest Landscape will professionally grade and install retaining walls that are both beautiful and functional, stabilizing soil, and preventing erosion while enhancing the look of your landscape. They can also be used to for privacy around patio areas. Our Design team will help you select the right color and shape for your project.

Conventional Block Walls: Manufactured concrete masonry blocks have stood the test of time as a core building material for retaining walls. Professional landscapers know they’re solid and stable, plus they need little or no maintenance and don’t rot in areas like the Pacific Northwest, where heavy precipitation is the rule. Contractors often use conventional concrete blocks for their strength and to give permanence to landscaped areas. Pre-cast blocks are available in a variety of widths to support just any height of wall, even multi-story. To add several walls, simple blocks are still the most economical choice.

Basic walls can be hidden from view by hardy, long-blooming plants like Tussock Bellflower, (Campanula Carpatica). These thrive in zones 4-7 and trail over a garden wall, adding intense purple color to shaded garden areas. While basic blocks may be economical, architectural blocks add designer touches and colors—for just a few cents more per block. Architectural blocks are made of the same material, but feature colors and textures that look like polished granite, hand-hewn stone and adobe. They never fade because the colors are part of the block itself.

Mortarless and dry-stacked concrete: The basic building blocks in engineered retaining wall systems, mortarless and dry-stacked concrete blocks are rapidly becoming the wall system of choice among landscapers, because they simplify and speed the building process. Generally installed professionally, mortarless dry-stacked blocks are made to fit together perfectly without cement grout, using a system of horizontal and vertical interlocking tabs. Because the blocks self-align, the fit is arrow-straight and level. Dry stacked block walls can be built rapidly, usually in a quarter of the time required by conventional blocks.

Because stackable blocks are not reinforced, however, they are best suited for walls under five feet in height. Mortarless stackables usually offer more tones and textures than conventional blocks; they’re larger, heavier and cost more, but one advantage is that they can be disassembled and moved. That’s important if you want to move a wall to install a whirlpool later, because it saves you from having to bring in a demolition team. Mortarless blocks were designed to simulate hard-to-align natural stones, allowing landscapers to offer more design options. Their modular construction includes separate curved shapes, capstones, pavers, corners and trim embellishments.

Old World Landscape Walls: Mortarless stackable blocks are made to resemble classic French Bordeaux stonework or, in darker shades, lend the feel of old England. Lighter colors and smooth shapes resemble traditional Italian and Spanish architecture.

Classic Cut Stone Landscape Walls: Want New England field stone but don’t like the price or the hassle? Engineered mortarless blocks now recreate all sorts of natural stone themes. Out west, classic 1900s Arts and Crafts design themes are enjoying a revival, making hand-hewn slate styles a popular choice.

Glass Block: Want to "light up" your garden or outdoor entertainment area? Designer glass blocks in clear and opalescent colors add a rich touch and they’re readily available in stackable, no-mortar designs. Ask your landscaper how a glass block wall can bring light and sparkle to a heavily shaded garden. He or she can help you select the right mortarless glass block for your property.

Reinforced Earth Landscape Walls: Reinforced soil is a surprisingly obvious retaining wall solution. Normally, soil is considered something to be held back by a wall, when the soil itself can be part of the structure. There are several ways to build soil-reinforced walls, and they are usually determined by soil type and height. One common method uses alternating layers of welded wire matting with layers of compacted back-fill earth from the landscaping site. Together, they provide the mass and strength to support the hillside behind the wall. Block facades or concrete crib facing supplies the aesthetic appeal; furthermore, landscape plantings can be used as a part of the wall itself. Other methods include concrete crib walls, made of a latticework of concrete elements, freestanding rock where slopes are gentle, and reinforced soil used in combination with other design elements, such as mortarless blocks. Used in combination, they are able to achieve greater heights than a single system would allow.

Poured Concrete Landscape Walls: Poured concrete retaining walls work well where heavy or unstable soil and steep slopes make other walls inadvisable. Concrete walls typically feature a tall wall on a horizontal foundation, resembling an upside-down letter "T". Stability is one reason why poured concrete walls work where other types will not. Worried about that "parking garage" look? Not anymore. Modern concrete can be colored, molded, even polished to resemble just about any designer material.Architectural concrete façade elements can cover a bare wall, and landscape designers these days are moving more toward new concrete finishing techniques that mimic natural stone, brick veneer, wood and even highly polished stone. Ornaments, cornices, column bases and all sorts of other items can be added to your retaining wall design. Your landscape design expert will be happy to provide samples, catalogue photos and websites with the latest designs.

Wooden Retaining Landscape Walls: One of the beauties of wood is that it is easy to use. Wood retaining walls lend a warm organic look to your landscape design, at a relatively low cost. There are three basic types of lumber used for walls, but to understand them, one must first consider that wood is an organic material subject to moisture, rot and termite attack where the wood comes into contact with soil that is naturally damp and a source of bacteria. This means that plain lumber is not a good choice, unless a wall is to be temporary.

Your best bet will be one of three materials, redwood, pressure treated fir, and used rail ties. Redwood has excellent rot and insect resistance, which explains why redwood trees live thousands of years. You benefit by redwood’s long life. A downside is that redwood is a soft, low-density material, so thicker lumber must be used to ensure a wall is strong enough to do the job. Rough redwood or construction grade heartwood lumber are the preferred choices for wall construction. Well-built, properly draining redwood retaining walls can last 20 years or more.

Pressure-treated lumber also is excellent for retaining wall construction because of its strength and hardness. Mills start with a hard, strong construction grade wood like Douglas fir, and then preservative chemicals are injected under pressure to limit the effects of insect and rot damage. Copper and arsenic compounds have been used in the past, but the Environmental Protection Agency recently banned them. A new chemical compound, known as ACQ reduces risks. The EPA says there is no need to worry about existing retaining walls, because there is no evidence that pressure treated lumber poses any significant risk.

Keep in mind that pressure treatment doesn’t extend all the way through the wood. When pressure treated boards are sawn, entry points are created for rot and insects to take hold. Pressure-treated fir walls must be properly constructed to prevent contact with soil and water. Even though pressure treated wood is slightly more expensive than redwood, walls can last longer, making these more economical to build.

Rail ties are incredibly versatile, and the fact you recycling them is a bonus. When railroads sell their old ties, disposal is an issue because they are often treated with creosote, an asphaltic product that prevents rot. Rich, dark and seasoned, you can stack them, make walkways, driveways and step-side planters, knowing these will hold up for years. Rail ties may run about the same cost as bricks or blocks, but construction labor savings will make them more economical in the long run. Plantings can accentuate their beauty, too. Consider fall-blooming Japanese windflower (Anenome japonica, zones 4-8) as a waterfall ground cover. They will grow to a height of three feet and, once established, will spread underground by bulbs.

Partition Landscape Walls: Boulder walls look natural in any landscape for homes and businesses.

There are many kinds of water features for gardens, but the pond is the ideal way to experiment with aquatic plants, attract birds and other wild life and create a special soothing site for you to enjoy. Add a fountain and its soothing sounds can change the mood of your garden. Water gardens can fit any budget and size. They can be fish ponds or not. From a small tub to an elaborate waterfall, ponds should enhance the landscape and look totally natural. Combine stone walls, a pergola with climbing plants, a bridge or gate and create a dramatic garden space for humans and wildlife alike. Fertilizer and Weed Control

Fertilizer and Weed Control Services

The constant rain of in Spring gives way to the first wave of Crab Grass. This means it is about time to start fertilizing your lawn or yard. If you want greener grass, a nitrogen based fertilizer is your first step.

Maple Crest Landscape uses Nitrogen fertilizer because of the life-giving properties, as Nitrogen is a vital element in turfs growth process.

Too much Nitrogen fertilizer, however, can seep through groundwater and into our waterways. This is why we recommend having a MDA Certified Spray Technician apply ANY chemicals or fertilizer to your lawn. Maple Crest Landscape is a Healthy Lawn Care Provider for Watershed Protection, and we care about the environment.

Benefits of Lawn Fertilization and Weed Control:

  • Promotes new grass growth, and vigor
  • Relieves stress, and the effects of aging and wear from winter months
  • Helps counter-act damage to roots done by insects or disease
  • Creates competition for weeds, because of dense root growth

Tips: Cut it high, and leave the clippings please!

By keeping your grass height at 3″, the turf will create a natural barrier against weeds and other unwanted vegetation. When mowing a lawn, always remember: Taller blades of grass promotes longer root growth, and shades out weeds. Lawn Mowing clippings are a natural turf fertilizer. They are a wonderful source of Nitrogen (What is commonly found in almost all fertilizers!), and can reduce the need for additional fertilizer by up to 25%!

All of our lawn and irrigation systems are guaranteed after the time of completion. This also includes draining the lawn sprinkler and irrigation system in the fall and turning it back on the following spring.

Annual maintenance is required to adjust the irrigation system for plant growth and seasonal temperature changes, to protect from freeze damage, to maintain water efficiency and to extend the overall life of irrigation systems.

Service & Maintenance Include:

  • Lawn Sprinklers Installation
  • Lawn Sprinkler Repairs
  • Spring Start-ups
  • Summer Inspections
  • Fall Shut downs/ Winterizations
  • Backflow Tests
  • Water Audits
  • Landscape lighting
  • Repairs / Renovations / Upgrades
  • General sprinkler & lighting maintenance

Spring Start Up: In the spring, we open up all water and electrical sources and slowly reenergize the sprinkler lines. We perform all necessary seasonal adjustments – check and adjust your sprinkler heads for plant growth and other landscape changes and to ensure they are operating properly, program the water timer (clock), as well as check all main sprinkler lines and manifolds for leaks. If necessary we will repair sprinkler at this time.

Winterizations: Snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures can cause damage to your irrigation system, which is why we take several precautions to “winterize” or protect your sprinkler system in the Fall. We close all water and electrical sources properly and use an air compressor to blow all water out of the underground sprinkler lines. This prevents any leftover water from freezing and damaging the irrigation lines.

Summer Inspections: As the seasons change, it becomes necessary to adjust the water timer and frequencies to avoid over or under watering due to temperature changes and varying weather conditions. During the summer, we will check and adjust your sprinkler heads, sprinkler pipe and drip irrigation for plant growth and other landscape changes and to ensure they are operating properly, program the water timer, as well as check all main sprinkler lines and irrigation manifolds for leaks.

Backflow Tests: Your local water authority may require an annual backflow prevention test to ensure that the backflow preventer device is preventing any irrigation water, which might contain fertilizers or other chemicals, from back-siphoning into your drinking water. Our certified backflow prevention testers perform this test on your property annually. We can provide all necessary applications and permits required by your local water authority.

Water audits often result in long-term savings on future water bills.

Tips - Don't Damage Your Driveway:

Sure, you've got to get rid of that blanket of snow so you won't fall on your keister on the way to the car, but watch out for another kind of injury: dinging up your driveway's surface. Check out our handy tips for avoiding premature wear and tear.
ASPHALT
Watch Out For: Badly cracked or brittle material. Aggressive shoveling or plowing on an uneven surface can chip off chunks of asphalt. Best Practices: Keep shovels and snowblower or plow blades at least a half-inch off the surface. If your driveway is badly aged, consider repaving it.

CONCRETE Watch Out For: Rock salt used for de-icing. The salt enters through cracks and corrodes the steel reinforcements embedded in the concrete, forcing early replacement. Best Practices: Use calcium chloride instead, which is less corrosive, and follow package instructions. Seal your driveway every three to five years to protect rebar.

PAVERS OR BRICK Watch Out For: Pavers or bricks that protrude from the driveway surface. They can be damaged by the tips of metal shovels or the blades of snowblowers or plows. Best Practices: Plastic and nonmetal shovels are your best bet for getting rid of snow. And when the thaw comes, tamp down any pavers or bricks that stick up.

CRUSHED STONE OR GRAVEL
Watch Out For: Above-freezing temps. When snow melts into the surface, getting rid of the icky slush without disturbing the stones is nearly impossible. Best Practices: Get rid of snow when temps are low, and keep shovels and snowblower or plow blades at least 1 inch off the surface. Place piles of snow in one area so lost stones can be recovered.
